Arriving in Style: The Kenmore Air Guide to Orcas Island
For the most breathtaking entrance to the island, flying with Kenmore Air is unbeatable. Whether you choose the wheel plane into Eastsound or the seaplane into Deer Harbor, you’ll trade the ferry lines for panoramic views of the islands.
Option 1: The Wheel Plane (Scheduled Service to ESD)
Flying into the Orcas Island Airport (ESD) puts you right on the edge of Eastsound village.
• Arrival: The airport is small and charming. You are just a 2-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from the heart of town.
• Car Rentals:Orcas Island Rental Cars is located directly at the airport. It is highly recommended to book in advance, especially during the summer.
• Shuttle/Taxi:Orcas Island Scenic Shuttle and Orcas Taxi provide reliable service from the airport, but they are not "on-demand" like city Ubers. Call at least 24 hours in advance to schedule your pickup
Option 2: The Seaplane (Scheduled Service to Deer Harbor)
Landing on the water at Deer Harbor Marina is the quintessential Pacific Northwest experience.
• Arrival: You’ll disembark onto the marina docks on the west side of the island.
• Car Rentals: Rentals aren't typically stationed at the marina. Most visitors arrange for their rental car to be delivered to the marina or take a shuttle to Eastsound to pick one up.
• Shuttle/Taxi: Because Deer Harbor is about 20 minutes from Eastsound, a pre-arranged taxi or shuttle is essential. There is no public transit waiting at the dock.
Traveler's Pro-Tips:
• Luggage Weights: Kenmore Air has strict baggage allowances (typically 25 lbs per person for seaplanes, 50 lbs per person for wheeled planes). Overweight bags may be sent on a later flight "space available." Pack light or ship larger items ahead!
• The Experience: These are small aircraft. If you’re prone to motion sickness, request a seat near the front and keep your eyes on the horizon. The views are incredible, so have your camera ready.
• Confirm Your Pickup: Double-check your taxi or rental car reservation 48 hours before your flight.
• Confirm Your Flight: These flights are only able to fly with good visibility. Always have a "Plan B" (ferry schedule) handy just in case, and keep your phone on to receive text alerts from the airline.
• Dress in Layers: The temperature on the tarmac or dock can be significantly different than in the cabin.
