Navigating the Salish Sea: A Guide to Getting Here

Orcas Island is accessible only by water or air, and the journey is part of the fun. Most guests arrive via the Washington State Ferry from the Anacortes Terminal.

Here are the three best ways to make the crossing.

Option 1: Bringing Your Vehicle (The Reservation Route)

Bringing a car offers the most flexibility for exploring the hidden corners of the island, from the heights of Mt. Constitution to the quiet West Beach.

• Booking: Reservations are highly recommended for vehicles. Space is released in three tiers: 2 months, 2 weeks, and 2 days before sailing at 7:00 AM PST.

• Arrival: You must be through the toll booth at least 30 minutes prior to your departure. During summer months, we suggest arriving 60 minutes early to ensure your spot.

• The Experience: Once parked, head up to the cabin or the outer decks. The 60-minute crossing is a prime time for whale watching and island photography.

Option 2: The Walk-On & Local Rental (The Stress-Free Route)

Avoid the "ferry line" stress and vehicle reservation scramble by walking onto the ferry as a passenger.

• Parking: Leave your car in the long-term parking lots at the Anacortes terminal.

• The Crossing: Walk-on passengers do not need reservations and can simply purchase a ticket at the terminal or online.

• Arrival at Orcas: Once you disembark at the Orcas terminal, you are in the village of Orcas Landing.

• Renting a Car: You can arrange a car rental to be waiting for you right at the landing through Orcas Island Shuttle or Orcas Island Rental Cars. It is a short, scenic 15-minute drive from the landing to the main village of Eastsound.

Option 3: The Cyclist’s Journey (The Adventurous Route)

For those looking for a slower pace and an active start to their getaway, biking onto the ferry is a popular choice.

• Boarding: Cyclists board the ferry first (ahead of vehicles). No reservations are required.

• The Ride: From the Orcas terminal to Eastsound is approximately 9 miles.

• What to Expect: Be prepared for rolling hills! Horseshoe Highway is beautiful but has narrow shoulders in some areas.

• Pro-Tip: If the hills feel daunting, look into renting an E-Bike locally, it makes the climb toward Moran State Park a breeze.

• Don’t use your car alarm onboard: The ferry movement WILL cause the alarm to go off.
